A brief history of Derby karate Academy

A karate class was set up at the old army barracks in Derby around 1967, after some time, one of the instructors set up a class at Moorways Sports Centre, which was overseen and visited by the Japanese instructors who introduced Wado-Ryu Karate into this country.

The club saw many students pass through its doors and as people progressed, overcame their own personal barriers, and achieved their goals, some by taking part in competition, others by improving their fitness, strength, and confidence through their general training.

The club steadily grew and in 1985 became what is now known as “Derby Karate Academy”. This in itself in time became the founder member of the “British Karate Academy”.

Currently the Academy can be seen to have a very high standard of instruction with many years of experience to draw upon, having taught people from club level through to national and international standards, with some of its students taking part in world championships, still to this day.

In addition to this, the Academy continues to have its links with Japan, being a direct branch member to the Japanese Karate Federation (JKF).

It’s important to note, that all our students who gain a black belt are registered in Japan and have certification from Japan too, unlike other clubs where their black belts are of their own making.

DKA continues to teach authentic Japanese Karate with a self-defence system suitable for today’s modern society
